Thrifty Thursdays – Eat your vegetables, get your vitamins!
Yesterday’s New York Times blared the headline SOME CUT BACK ON PRESCRIPTION DRUGS IN SOUR ECONOMY. Besides making me really sad that the difficult economy is causing some people to put their health in jeopardy, this headline also made me think about what we spend money on that is necessary, and what we spend money on that is not. And spending money unnecessarily on vitamins jumped right out at me.
Americans spend millions of dollars on vitamins and supplements. While I’m not a scientist or a doctor, and wouldn’t even begin to tell you which ones of those are necessary and which ones aren’t, I AM a Mom, and I do know that we should get as many of our nutrients as possible through a healthy diet. And vegetables and fruit should be a HUGE part of that diet.
How do you know how much of what kind of vitamins you need? One of my favorite places to not only see what I need but also how to get those vitamins from the food I eat is is the website EHOW.COM.
- Here’s an easy one from the site:
Eat more Vitamin C.
- Eat citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, lemons and limes.
- Drink citrus juices, preferably freshly squeezed.
- Add berries, melons, kiwi, papaya, pineapple and watermelon to your diet.
- Stock up on vegetables. Steam them or sauté them in a quick stir-fry to retain the most vitamin C.
