Facebook: Memo to Me

I found myself in meeting today and was surprised to find that I was one of the few people in the 40+ age group that is on Facebook. Come on ‘Boomers get on Facebook – it is a wonderful social networking site. And yes, a couple of college kids created the site for college kids – but it busted through that fence several years ago.

Join LinkedIn for business purposes and Facebook to keep current with your friends and family. It’s a wonderful way to share pictures and updates – it’s like an online reunion or yearly family holiday letter – only dynamic, interesting and only your friends can see your postings.

I’m beginning to feel like a Facebook evangelist. I want the 40/50+ crowd get over their apprehension. Many interesting, well-rounded moms with teens and college-aged kids fear Facebook because they think (or know) that their children don’t want them there. Unless you and your child agree to ‘friend’ each other – you won’t necessarily run into each other in cyberspace. If you go stalking your kids you will run into them – and perhaps photos you don’t want to see. Instead, seek out your friends – share with them – and you’ll have a wonderful experience.

Facebook is the place to reconnect with friends from high school, college roommates, neighbors from the old ‘hood, your favorite cousin in another state, and those you want to connect with online.

Just do it – sign up today. It takes no time. Have a couple of recent pictures to upload of your kids, family or grand kids handy. Share as much or as little as you want. Through Facebook, I reconnected with a high school friend that I rode to school with each morning for at least 3 years. And now, years later and with many states in between us, we have the opportunity to share photos, stories and snippets of what is happening in our lives. It’s 1979 again….Jackson Browne and the Eagles are singing….and we are chatting our way through the days.

Thanks for listening…if you are already on Facebook…search out Mama Says and become a friend.

My mother just called me to talk about Facebook, twitter and blogging. :-)
Our next mother-daughter project is to set her up on Facebook. Score one for the team.
    Thanks, Mom
