A different slice of New York
A few weeks ago we went to New York for a quick 24 hour stay. We only needed to be in New York for one reason – to hear our son Michael, a jazz bassist, play a gig in Brooklyn at Southpaw in Park Slope.
We’ve been to NYC a million times – and know where to stay and where to eat, or at least who to ask and where to google to get the latest and greatest answers to those questions. Park Slope presented a different challenge.
Surfing the internet for top hotels in Park Slope provided a short list with a 3 word answer – hotel le bleu. It is a hotel that ranks tops in design, and was just a few blocks from the neighborhood we wanted to be in. We pulled up from the airport – and found this very hip, cool building
stuck in the middle of a taxi garage and a Staples. I called a friend of mine to get some hotel recommendations (yes, i have friends who are hip and cool enough to live in the neighborhood, hi Julie!) and we selected Mary’s Fish Camp, which turned out to be a great choice for our group of 12 (especially since it was a beautiful night and we wanted to eat in the garden!)
OK – hotel, check. dinner, check. Now what were we going to do with the few hours we had to kill before the show started? It was our lucky day – a Sunday – because the Park Slope Farmers Market was in full swing.
. What a great community market! Local farmers and purveyors were selling Baked Goods, cut flowers, fish, fruit, hand made soaps, veggies, prepared foods….it was a great day to squeeze and smell the end of summer tomatoes,
taste beautiful early fall grapes,
and buy homemade pickles straight from the barrel.
So the next time you’re planning a trip to the Big Apple, try a side trip to Park Slope – it’s a really fun and delicious slice of New York that we rarely get to see.
