Gone With The Wind – 75th Anniversary Celebration

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Frankly, my dear….

When I moved to Atlanta I was eager to check out Peachtree Street – that fabulous street that sashays through ATL and is home both Margaret Michell and Elton John.

It’s a quirky twist of fate that the author of Gone With The Wind and the Rocket Man live down the street from each other. But I digress. The Atlanta History Center invited a group of bloggers and social media mavens to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the publication of Margaret Michell’s 1936 novel and to preview upcoming programs to commemorate her life and the novel.

The Atlanta History Center’s Margaret Mitchell House celebrates the 75th anniversary of the publication of Mitchell’s acclaimed novel, Gone With the Wind, presenting a variety of exclusive public programs throughout the 2011 anniversary.

This Saturday you can join the celebration and experience 150 years of history right on Peachtree Street. On May 14, 2011 take part in a special day of programs delving into the entire Gone With the Wind story and travel through time, including Civil War soldiers in the heart of Atlanta, the city in the 1920s when Margaret Mitchell wrote the book, and the lasting legacy of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Here are the details:

Awarding Winning Cupcake Recipe

14-Nov-2010 15:18, 2.8, 3.85mm, 0.05 sec, ISO 64

Chocolate and peanut butter is a winning combination. And when you bite into this cupcake from Chocolate Pink Cafe in Atlanta, GA you’ll know why members of the Atlanta Food Bloggers’ Alliance voted the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake (click for pdf of recipe) their all-round favorite cupcake at a recent tasting.

Executive Pastry Chef Christian Balbierer is passionate about flavor – complex flavor layering in his sumptuous desserts. On a recent Sunday afternoon, he opened the upstairs social space at Chocolate Pink Cafe to over a dozen food bloggers to learn more about his fresh approach to using best quality chocolate and unique flavor combinations to make one of a kind delicacies — and to vote on their favorite cupcake.

Judging cupcakes is no easy task. We were asked to consider: Flavor. Texture. Presentation. Uniqueness. Best Overall. The 1st Annual Chocolate Pink Cupcake Contest was a workout for the senses and the taste buds. Here’s a sneak peak of the tasting fun!

Making soup with Souper Jenny – a Thrifty Thursday find!

Soup Making Tips

I’ve lived in Atlanta for 20+ years now, and I’ve been really lucky to know Jenny Levison for much of that time.  Jenny is  Atlanta’s soup diva, and if you’ve ever driven by her shop, Souper Jenny, anywhere near lunchtime on any day that she’s open, you shouldn’t be surprised to see the line going way out into the parking lot.  Jenny was recently featured in AJC.com (the online version of Atlanta’s daily newspaper) where she shares her ideas (and a few recipes, hooray!) for making foolproof soup.  Here are some of Jenny’s tips:

Souper Jenny’s soup-making tips

● A soup can take 15 minutes, or it can cook all day. Find a recipe that suits the time you have.

● A heavy-duty, large stockpot is an essential piece of kitchen equipment.

● Invest in a hand-held or immersion blender. An immersion blender goes right into the soup pot and blends everything in a flash — no more ladling hot soup into a blender.

● Make soup ahead. Most taste even better the next day.

● It’s OK to use store-bought stock. Buy the highest-quality low-sodium stock you can find. The fewer the ingredients, the better.

● Sauté onions first, then add the garlic. Garlic burns quickly, so starting with the onions will temper the heat.

● Sweating vegetables in a sauté pan or roasting them before adding to soup releases some of their liquid and concentrates the flavors.

● Sauté or roast bitter vegetables such as eggplant and peppers before adding to soup.

● Clean mushrooms by putting them in a colander and shaking out loose dirt. Use a clean cloth to wipe each mushroom individually. Rinsing under water will make them rubbery when cooked.

● Unless the soup will be pureed, cut all ingredients into spoonable pieces.

● One way to make a vegetable soup creamy is to melt in low-fat cream cheese.

● Taste everything as you go.

● Use recipes as a guide. Read through them. Substitute if you need to adapt to what you have on hand or to your taste, and then try it!

Atlanta area food drive

Join existing community efforts, and help your neighbors.  In Atlanta, 11Alive (TV Station WXIA) is doing a huge Summer Food Drive on Friday June 19.

It’s easy to participate, and will help the thousands of people who go hungry in Atlanta – especially the kids who would get fed during the school year at school, but now that school is out, often dont have a complete meal.  11Alive is partnering with the Atlanta Braves Foundation, Publix, and the Atlanta Community Food Bank to help change that.

And so can you.

Bring canned food to any Braves Game in June and receive a special ticket offer.

On June 19th, every Publix store in the area will be collecting non-perishable food items. All you have to do is drop the food in the barrel at the Publix store.

PS – Mama Says “No More Frozen Pizza!” is joining the cause and will donate 2% of sales proceeds to agencies and programs working to support Americans who need assistance with meals and basic food items.  You can buy a gift for a new cook, new bride, or new college grad and help contribute to feeding the hungry at the same time!!
